What Is Rebun Island? The Floating Island of Flowers

Published 2026-10-04 · Sources checked 2026-10-04 · Treasure Hunting Co., Ltd.

This guide is for visitors who want to know what Rebun Island is and when its flowers bloom. It uses the English pages of "National Parks of Japan" (JNTO, with content provided by the Ministry of the Environment), JNTO's own pages and the Hokkaido Official Tourism Site "HOKKAIDO LOVE!". All pages were read on 2026-10-04. Bloom times vary by year, so check with a local guide.

The short answer

Rebun is the smaller of the two islands off Wakkanai, and part of Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park, which JNTO calls "Japan's northernmost national park". The park's page says Rebun Island is known locally as "the island of flowers", and JNTO's page calls it the "Floating Island of Flowers" with roughly 300 varieties of alpine plants growing wild "even at sea level".

Why the flowers are unusual

The park's Momoiwa tour page explains that cold-climate alpine plants can only survive at altitudes of 2,000 meters or more on Honshu, and even on Hokkaido only at 1,500 meters or more. On Rebun, however, they bloom near the shoreline. JNTO's feature on Hokkaido's flowers says the island preserves hundreds of species of hardy native wildflowers and rare alpine flora such as edelweiss and the lady's slipper orchid.

Food

JNTO says the seas around Rishiri and Rebun produce a high-grade kelp known as Rishiri Kombu, and that the area is also famous for sea urchin. The Hokkaido itinerary describes hokke (Atka mackerel) chanchan-yaki as a local specialty on Rebun, and a sea urchin rice bowl at a restaurant run directly by the fisheries cooperative. The itinerary names the restaurants, but we do not repeat the names here because the pages give no current menus or prices.

Guided walks

JNTO's flower feature says there are seven trekking courses and that local guides offer a variety of tours, including one that takes participants to see colonies of edelweiss. The park's Momoiwa tour page describes a leisurely walk with an expert guide, wireless guide receivers and magnifying glasses so that you can see the tiny flowers. It lists English with advance notice.
